Graduate Fashion Week is where it all begins. There is no disputing that we have the most amazing design talent in this country!

Until 1991 there was no comprehensive catwalk schedule amongst the UK’s leading fashion colleges. Shows took place over four weeks across the country with no synergy or focal point.

Over the years Graduate Fashion Week has launched the careers of such brilliant British designers such as, Stella McCartney, Julian MacDonald, Antonio Baradi, Hussein Cha-layan, Christopher Bailey, Stuart Vevers and Owen Gaster.

British Fashion Council

December 8, 2010 1 comment

The British Fashion Council was formed in 1983 out of the Fashion Industry Action Group, an ad hoc group created in 1981.  The British Fashion Council aims to showcase British designers and develop London’s position as a major player in the international fashion arena. As a result, London Fashion Week ranks alongside New York, Milan and Paris as one of the ‘Big Four’.

Alongside these platforms to promote the very best of our designer fashion, we work behind the scenes in a number of vital ways to support the fashion industry. Through our  BFC Colleges Council initiative, we form a link between the industry and fashion graduates from the UK’s leading colleges. Meanwhile, thanks to a series of important sponsorship schemes including the MA Scholarship, New Gen and Fashion Forward, we are able to provide support to emerging British fashion designers. These schemes range from business mentoring and seminars to competitions and sponsorship.

Vivienne Westwood

December 6, 2010 Leave a comment

Vivienne Westwood‘s designs combine a fearless unconformity with a sense of tradition. She is renowned for her gentle parody of Establishment styles, her use of very British fabrics such as Harris tweed and tartan, her re-use of historic garments such as the corset and crinoline. Yet, her approach has always been practical, driven by a curiosity about how things work, a process she describes as ‘learning through action’.
